A simple grading system is used for walks.

The fewer the number of footprints the more leisurely the walk and the greater the number of footprints the more challenging the walk!

Grade 1: Shorter days or half days walking. Typically 3-4 hours walking, covering a distance of 6-8 miles with minimal ascent and descent.

Grade 2: Shorter days walking. Typically 5 hours walking, covering distances of approximately 8-11 miles with up to 500 m of ascent and descent.

Grade 3: A day walk of approximately 9-12 miles with ascents and descents in the region of 500 to 700 m, with occasional longer ascents. Approximately 6 hours walking each day.

Grade 4: Longer days, 7 or 8 hours walking, with ascents and descents in the region of 1000 m each day and distances of 10+ miles.

Grading walks is an inexact science. The grade of a walk depends on more than distance, ascent and descent, and within any holiday there will be easier days and harder days. The grade allocated is designed indicate the level of the harder walks on the holiday.
