There is far more to walking on Mallorca than the GR221 -spectacular as it is. For this new Mallorcan holiday, we move to the far north of the island to the beautiful and traditional walled town of Alcudia to explore the spectacular Formentor and Alcudia peninsulas, walk sections of the GR222, a second pilgrimage route on the island which runs from Arta to the monastery at Lluc, and explore the northern Tramuntana mountains.
Holiday highlights
- Explore the bays, peninsulas and mountains of the north coast of Mallorca, an area we only started to delve into on the GR221
- Explore the beautiful Formentor peninsula and walk on the incredibly engineered Cami Vell once the only access route for the Far (lighthouse) de Formentor.
- Walk sections of the GR222, a pilgrimage route that winds its way through the mountains from Arta to the monastery at Lluc.
- Stay in the Petit Alcudia boutique hotels in the traditional walled Mallorcan town of Alcudia and eat in the lovely Sa Mossegada restaurant.
Accommodation
Alcudia is one of the attractive traditional old towns of Mallorca. Originally settled by the Romans with the building of the Roman city of Pol-lentia, the town walls were constructed in the 14th century after the Catalan conquest by King James II. Inside the town walls lies a beautiful Mallorcan town with sandstone buildings, winding streets and open squares lined with bars, cafes and individual independent shops.
The town of Alcudia is remarkably short of large hotels as the majority of accommodation is down in the port. This makes it a lovely place to stay! For this holiday we use a tiny chain of 3 boutique hotels called Can Calco, with each ‘hotel’ containing 7 or 8 rooms. Our hotels are Petit Alcudia with its fresh and modern rooms, located in a building of great antiquity, and C’an Simo, a 1-minute walk away, a carefully remodelled 19th century manor house. All rooms are comfortable and en-suite
Meals are taken in the hotel restaurant, Sa Mossegada, a few doors away from the hotel.

Arrive in Mallorca and transfer to Alcudia.
Meet at 7:30 pm in the Hotel bar for a short briefing about the week ahead before dinner.

Day 2: Puig de Sant Marti

We start the week with a local walk to warm us up for the days ahead. Puig sant Marti is the mountain to the south west of Alcudia and offers some wonderful views of Alcudia town and port, the two bays (Alcudia and Pollensa) and a large part of the mountains of Mallorca as well as down over the Mallorcan plain and the l’Albufereta nature reserve. In short, we can see all the areas we will be visiting over the coming days. Walking from the hotel we follow quiet lanes and paths to the summit of Puig de Sant Marti before returning to Alcudia by an alternative route. You may wish to continue your exploration of the town by visiting the remains of the Roman city of Pol-lentia situated on the edge of Alcudia.
14.5 km, ascent/descent 300m
Meals included: breakfast and dinner
Day 3: Talaia d’Alcudia

Today we walk on the Alcudia peninsular which contains a wonderfully compact range of hills with wonderful views over to the Formentor peninsular, the Pollensa Bay and the Arta peninsular. We take taxis to the Ermita de la Victoria and from there ascend Talaia d’Alcudia to take in the stunning 360o views of the surrounding hills and coastline. From there we descend on a rocky path to start with down to Coll Baix where there is a picnic area and from there we continue to the ancient walled town of Alcudia which has been in existence since Roman times.
13 km, ascent 480 m descent 620 m
Meals included: breakfast and dinner
Day 4: The GR222 Caimari to Lluc

Today we follow the old highway and pilgrimage route, now the GR222, from Caimari to Coll de sa Batalla and onto Lluc. Travelling by private transport to Caimari we ascend on this beautiful old route as we climb gradually and deliberately for views that open up around us to the Coll de sa Batalla. We will penetrate the hordes of cyclists that gather here for a drink at the bar before continuing on the GR to Son Amer and then running along with the GR221 route familiar to many of you for a kilometre or so before peeling off to Manut. From here we drop down to the Monastery at Lluc for refreshments before getting the bus back down to Alcudia.
14 km, ascent 660 m descent 335 m
Meals included: breakfast and dinner
Day 5: Free day
Today is free for your own exploration of the local area. You could take the direct bus to Palma, the cosmopolitan capital of Mallorca to visit the cathedral and Arab baths or take your swimming things down to Port Alcudia or Port Pollensa for a swim. Alcudia itself is a lovely place to spend the day, and you could even combine this with exploring another of Mallorca’s delightful old towns and take the bus to Pollensa. l’Albufereta nature reserve is a short walk or bus ride from the hotel if you would prefer to spend the day strolling and bird watching. This evening is left free for you to try out a different local restaurant.
Meals included: breakfast
Day 6: Puig del Migdia and the GR222
N.B. This walk has not yet been recced and so may change.
Today we travel east from Alcudia to explore a second section of the pilgrimage route from Arta to Lluc, now the GR 222. We start our walk in the Llevant Natural Park heading up to the Puig del Migdia, where we will enjoy some wonderful views of the area. We then continue on the GR down all the way to the coastal path to finish at the lovely village of Colonia Sant Pere for refreshments and possibly a swim in the sea before returning to Alcudia.
14km, ascent 375m descent 585m
Meals included: breakfast and dinner
Day 7: Formentor peninsula
Today we explore the Formentor Peninsula with its ominously leaning peaks. The new road is a feat of engineering; however, the old road Cami Vell de Far de Formentor is even more remarkable. Constructed in the 1860s it zig-zags its way along the peninsular at a gradient that allowed horses and carts to make the arduous journey to the lighthouse.
We head out of Alcudia on the bus (cars are not allowed on the Formentor Peninsula) and travel the full length of the peninsula to the Formentor lighthouse, just because we can -and the scenery is breathtaking! After a few minutes exploring, we jump back on the bus and travel part way back along the peninsula. Now on foot, we walk through the short tunnel under the peak of el Fumat and then leave the new road to pick up Cami Vell as it winds its way up to Coll de la Bretxa, once the only way to reach the lighthouse. For those that wish to we can deviate from the zigzags to climb the peak of el Fumat. This is a short but challenging climb and is entirely optional. We regroup at the Coll before descending down to the beach at Cala Murta for a late lunch, From there follow a track to Formentor Beach, an incredibly beautiful spot, before picking up the bus to return to Alcudia. An incredible day out.
11km, ascent 440m descent 525m
